PS1 art book fair

this weekend was pretty awesome. it involved two separate parties, one where it felt like the whole williamsburg emergency department showed up because some kid was climbing on a construction site,

and me being naively shocked at how packed the L was at 4.30am. (ex. 2 above)

and one where the party hosts' owned 9 goya etchings on their living room wall, which me and another friend had a small conniption about for a few minutes on saturday night.

it also included attending a really overwhelming art book fair at PS1 in queens, the MOMA's counterpart. there were a ridiculous amount of artists and galleries selling themselves. i have to say i did really want to buy a beautiful sophie calle book, but somehow decided not to when i saw the 150$ price tag. i saw a william powhida piece like i said in my last post, and a lot of other interesting things. i signed up for a lot of mailing lists and half heartedly looked at prints, books, and posters that i couldn't really afford. i did love this elevator installation they had at PS1 though, although it was also pretty seizure inducing (you can see my friend jordan's face in the corner):

i liked this smart ass note on the wall someone put up in contrast to all the posters and prints and merchandise hung up on other artists' walls (if you can't read it, it says THIS SPACE DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING, MOVE ALONG):

those few pictures are only the tip of the iceberg of what was all being shown. one thing i didn't like was the pouring rain that managed to get us all wet. what i did like about the rain is that PS1 had these huge tarps outside to ward off rain, but every once in a while too much rain would collect and- whoosh! dump all over some unassuming art fair goer. success! it missed me by about 30 seconds when i was going inside.

i also got to spend some time hanging out with one of my teachers from corcoran who happened to be in town, which was really nice, as well as go out to dinner with a newer friend from nysp. yay! good weekend.

POWHIDA

last wednesday william powhida came to talk at nysp. he's a NY artist/art critic who does really interesting things with "still life" paintings of torn out notebook paper with lists, of magazine articles with made up stories, etc. he also has an alter ego that he wrote a screenplay about, and he showed us some of the movie he made. it's basically making fun of himself, and he got one of the famous guys who does voice overs for all the holly wood movies to do the voiceover for the movie he made, "POWHIDA," where he calls himself a genius and stuff. it was hilarious, really. i hope he puts it up on youtube or something soon. he also did drawings like "Everyone I've Ever Met from Memory (that I can remember)", which was one of my favorites. it makes me want to try to do that just for myself. it even included caricatures and little blurbs about who each person was.

he also did an "enemies" list. he also told us about how he did a caricature of zach feuer, who is a gallery owner in new york city, and zach saw it at an art fair and stormed out. and because of how zach reacted, it made the drawing all the more famous. idk, i would definitely recommend checking out powhida's site and googling him as well, because he does some really interesting and humorous stuff, and he's very up and coming.

what was funny is i just got hearing from last week, and then i saw one of his pieces at a book art fair at PS1 in queens! i probably shouldn't have been so surprised, but i was just like, oh, i just saw him!
