the post about the albatrosses reminds me of this spoken word poem by terry jacobus.
(the images are kind of lame, and the background wind is annoying, but this is one of my favorite poems.)

Seperation With Duct Tape

i decided to redo the "red hair twins" drawings with a greenish-gray wash background to give them some more depth. i also added a few more to the narrative. view them here.

regina spektor!

this is the first chance i've had to write about seeing regina spektor in concert. and i have an assortment of grainy, blurry photos to share, too!
i actually had pretty good seats. my camera takes pretty bad photos though. i had orchestra seating, on stage left (or the audience's right). this was nice because then regina was facing my side of the audience! then the people sitting next to me appeared to know someone in the opening band (jupiter one or something?) and they all ended up leaving pretty soon after the opening band finished. thank god, because they were annoying. and that way i was able to move all the way over and be a little bit more center stage.
her voice was truly beautiful- just as good as she sounds on her albums. she was dressed in a simple black dress with some kind of sparkly brooch, not too much make up, but definitely bright red lipstick! she came out singing "the calculation," off of her newest album, "far." she's so beautiful! and she seemed so shy and gracious. she had a quartet and a guy playing the drums accompanying her for some of the songs, too.
getting to see your favorite singer in concert is awesome. it just meant so much to me. it was a pretty emotional experience, because i feel such a strong connection with so many of her songs. going by myself wasn't too bad, but i did wish i could've shared the experience with my dad, who's also a big fan. hearing songs like "laughing with" and "samson" especially made me wish that. this really was a wonderful gift from him and my grandparents. i am so thankful.
she said thank you after each song, and nearer to the end of the concert she just seemed so grateful. "it's like a dream," she said, about getting to have a show at radio city music hall. she said all her family and friends were there- they must be so proud of her! imagine being from new york city and ending up getting to have a show at radio city! i'm legitimately proud of her, haha.
above is a photo of her singing a song i'd never heard before a cappella. one of the lines was, "brown eyes are the truest eyes of them all." ;) i have brown eyes. it was a funny song though, at the end of the song it went, "what am i even talking about, don't believe any of this song, my eyes are blue," etc. below is her accompanying herself on a beautifully colored electric guitar. i was pretty psyched when she played "that time."
she ended the show kind of early, i felt... at least, at first. she said i'll play one more song, and i was kind of bummed because she hadn't played a few of my other favorite (older) songs. she left the stage and everybody stood up calling for an encore- and she came out with her quartet and played five more songs! and she started the encore with "samson" and "us." two of my FAVORITE songs. i teared up, i'm not gonna lie. i was so happy she played those songs, you have no idea. the encore was obviously planned, but it was still wonderful. the first couple songs this huge disco ball came out of the floor and flashed lights all around the concert hall.

idk. it meant so much to me that i didn't miss this.

i got a curtain for my studio and have an accumulation of nine birdcages, the makings of a dress, antlers, an animation, and a cold.
yesterday we went to a list of galleries for class. i took a few pics, saw some interesting things. we saw a jean-michel basquiat painting being sold for nine million dollars. this flower garden installation wasn't on our list of galleries, but we saw it from the outside and couldn't resist going in.
this stamp was being sold in a gallery store for 50$? It says, "I know in the past I've found it difficult to stay these words, but I LOVE YOU."
this photo installation. the deer is a sculpture, the rest is plastic film and wooden frame. this wasn't on our list of galleries to see, either.
this wasn't on our list, either, haha, but it's an installation of crushed eggshells and cassette film. some of the eggs had words on them, like "love today."
aaaand this wasn't on our list either. but it was a weird sculpture made of feathers and taxidermied birds and bugs and butterflies. and that's my favorite kind of bird. dead bird, but yeah. :)

i liked this pulley system door in one of galleries we were actually supposed to see. wasn't too into the actual show though.
googly eyed movie posters!
and street performers doing acrobats on the subway. they kind of reminded me of 1900s era performers with the tricks they were doing.

we saw kanye west's girlfriend, amber rose walking around chelsea too. she's shorter than i thought. that's probably because she was wearing sneakers and sweats. and an insane amount of make up. yeah. no kanye in sight, thankfully. i'm not a fan.

PS1 art book fair

this weekend was pretty awesome. it involved two separate parties, one where it felt like the whole williamsburg emergency department showed up because some kid was climbing on a construction site,
(ex. 1)

and me being naively shocked at how packed the L was at 4.30am. (ex. 2 above)
and one where the party hosts' owned 9 goya etchings on their living room wall, which me and another friend had a small conniption about for a few minutes on saturday night.
it also included attending a really overwhelming art book fair at PS1 in queens, the MOMA's counterpart. there were a ridiculous amount of artists and galleries selling themselves. i have to say i did really want to buy a beautiful sophie calle book, but somehow decided not to when i saw the 150$ price tag. i saw a william powhida piece like i said in my last post, and a lot of other interesting things. i signed up for a lot of mailing lists and half heartedly looked at prints, books, and posters that i couldn't really afford. i did love this elevator installation they had at PS1 though, although it was also pretty seizure inducing (you can see my friend jordan's face in the corner):
i liked this smart ass note on the wall someone put up in contrast to all the posters and prints and merchandise hung up on other artists' walls (if you can't read it, it says THIS SPACE DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING, MOVE ALONG):
i liked how they were screenprinting bags right there in one of the rooms:
and these bittersweet manhattan circa 9-11 matchboxes by tobias wong:
this huge installation outside PS1:
those few pictures are only the tip of the iceberg of what was all being shown. one thing i didn't like was the pouring rain that managed to get us all wet. what i did like about the rain is that PS1 had these huge tarps outside to ward off rain, but every once in a while too much rain would collect and- whoosh! dump all over some unassuming art fair goer. success! it missed me by about 30 seconds when i was going inside.

i also got to spend some time hanging out with one of my teachers from corcoran who happened to be in town, which was really nice, as well as go out to dinner with a newer friend from nysp. yay! good weekend.
